Of all the jokes I've seen in Shadows of the Damned, the funniest thing is that the game was given the M category – for adults. Trust me, the game is nothing, however.... During the passage, I used a weapon called a "Hot Boner", stuffed disgusting rebellious things into the mouths of moaning babies, ran over the body of a huge naked woman whose breasts were the size of an entire tent. And gags– lots of horny gags.
In short, Shadows of the Damned is uncouth, rude, wacky, incredibly profane... and kind of a wonderful project.
The game chronicles the adventures of the demon hunter Garcia Fucking Hotspur (yes, the middle name is really his!). After a short intro in which his girlfriend Paula is abducted and dragged to Hell by the demon lord Fleming, the player begins to work on creating a "movie". Actually, Garcia himself calls his adventures a "road movie." The tribute to Grindhouse and the work of director Robert Rodriguez are visible from the very beginning.
Cascades of profanity are normal here, but untidy humor flows like a cornucopia, and Garcia's sidekick, Johnson, needs to be "grateful" for most of it. A lover of sexy puns, a flying disembodied demon skull with a lecherous outlook on life and a charming British accent. Johnson doesn't just fly and swear – he also helps Garcia survive and is able to transform into several types of weapons, including a "Hot Boner". Well aware of all the loopholes in the inferno, Johnson is a kind of guide and from time to time bursts into colorful comments about the surrounding area, as well as provides a lot of useful information. And such a guide was very useful to me, because the Hell of Shadows of the Damned is not at all the way Dante described it. Cobblestone streets, dirty pubs, shabby streetlights, and Tom Waits songs from dark alleys — this hell is completely unbiblical. It's a place where demons hang out in strip clubs, and absinthe is considered a miraculous elixir of health.
Of course, this is not to say that there are no nightmarish moments in this Hell. One of them is the demon doors, an iron gate with a baby face in place of the door knocker. The gates open only after Garcia feeds the baby the appropriate filth — either an eye, a brain, or strawberries (probably an exotic delicacy for demons). It's a little disconcerting to see Garcia stuffing a baby with all this while shouting "Eat this shit!"
The next item on the list of nightmares is the abundance of demons. The smallest of them resemble a dried-up corpse, these terrible creatures usually attack Garcia in packs. Most demons can be easily overwhelmed with a single headshot from a pistol, or a shotgun blast at point-blank range. More impressive demons have a vulnerable spot – a reservoir of human blood, which gives them energy. And the only way to kill such a demon is to destroy the tank, so Garcia must get as close to it as possible. These demons are drawn much more carefully. My favorite is a huge, hulking monster with blades in his hands. Apparently he managed to swallow a harmonica and now his every breath is accompanied by a cacophony of sounds. Other bosses are also good, such as a minotaur that doesn't fit on the screen or a hefty raven that periodically croaks "Fuck you!"
It's possible to discuss the gameplay of Shadows of the Damned for a long time, however, the most important thing in it is a lovingly created world. The controls are familiar and convenient – a third–person view, shooting with the right mouse button, and zooming and aiming with the left. Weapon upgrades can be found or purchased by increasing their damage, reload speed, or magazine capacity, for example. Again, it's almost a standard system.
There are weapons with an additional shooting mode - a pistol that shoots sticky balls and a shotgun that throws bombs, but they are mainly used to complete puzzles, not to kill enemies. One exception is the latest upgrade of the machine gun, which makes it self–guided, which makes boss battles insultingly simple.
It is also worth noting that there is no possibility of re-playing the game "New Game Plus", which is rather strange for such a project. None of this makes fighting unpleasant or boring. The combat system created by Shinji Mikami (who worked on Resident Evil 4) looks great. I want to say that this type of combat, which appeared in Resident Evil in 2005, had become just a sign of good taste by 2011. However, all boss battles eventually repeat themselves. All tactics can be reduced to two words – shoot at the red. But the battles pass by, the "highlight of the program" is still the world of the game. Garcia crosses many locations – from the swamp to the infernal red light district, and everywhere and very often he meets his beloved Paula – she repeatedly dies and is reborn before his eyes. It sounds strange, but the narrative never gets serious – even in the most difficult situations, Johnson does not miss the opportunity to argue another vulgarity.
In general, Shadows of the Damned is what it is – offensive and vulgar. It is rich in profanity, bawdy anecdotes, and sexual imagery. In fact, the masculine sexuality of the "macho" sometimes becomes so extreme that it is simply disturbing. Paula's frequent murders and revivals are accompanied by sexually charged dialogues. Of course, this is quite logical for hell, but soon it begins to bother and even disgust.
For the most part, Shadows of the Damned remains a mannered, silly, and slightly over-the-top adventure. Of course, it's interesting to destroy hordes of demons, but as the game progresses, the real "chips" of this "road movie" are revealed - a friendly demon with a southern accent, 2D levels, or something else. And, of course, it's all worth a little trip to Hell. But it's better not to take the children with you. Le football reste le sport roi des paris en ligne.
